O, thou, father of the nation,
We owe you salutation.
For each and everything that you did;
For the cause of the nation and freedom’s seed;
For the wheel called ‘CHARKHA’,1 the steering of ‘SWADESHI’;2
For the drive of ‘CHALE JAO’,3 to expel ‘VIDESHI’;4
For the teachings of truth, nonviolence and peace;
For the messages of cleanliness & patience against tease.
Guided thou, for listening not , seeing not, speaking not an evil;
Still one of us only, dared you kill.
Gone might be you but not your thoughts;
Forever, they’ll inspire, like lustrous spots.
Therefore, O, thou, father of the nation,
We owe you salutation;
With lotuses of hearts of a hundred plus crores;
From the peak of the Himalayas to the ocean’s roars;
O, thou father of the nation,
We owe you salutation,
We owe you salutation.
That He, the loving Lord of all,
Who comforth the poor and weak
And saveth those who sin and fall,
May lead them to the path of light,
And teach them how to live in peace;
Or spare him in his weary age,
The sight of fratricidal war.
And then he fasted – and they came
And prayed to him to eat and live;
And vowed to be as brothers all.
And peace and calm was then restored
In fair Calcutta, and again
In Delhi, seat of ancient kings.
But soon again the gathering clouds
Broke in the north and over the wet;
And tales of horror shook the land –
Murder and fire and ravage grim,
And fury ‘gainst the young and old–
Mother and child and man and maid –
And deeds of shame more deep than death.
And then he prayed again that He
The loving Lord of all the world,
His erring children spare, and take
Instead him as a sacrifice –
So there be peace within the land!
There was a band of fiery men,
Who thought that he, the best of all
The Hindus had, by words of peace
Wrought weakness in their fainting hearts,
And given to those intent on war
Across the border, cause to gloat
In triumph o’er their hideous deeds.
And so they vowed that he should die –
That there be peace within the and.
And one of them in secret came,
And mingled with the waiting crowd;
And as this man of God approached
With folded palms to join in prayer –
Advanced, knelt, kissed his feet–and then,
Ere any arm could interpose,
Lifted his hand and shot him through
A MAN WITH A SMALL BUILT,
HUMBLE, KIND AND GENEROUS
AN ABLE LAWYER BY PROFESSION,
THREW AWAY THE COMFORTS OF LIFE; AND
MADE SIMPLE LIVING HIS LIFE’S MOTTO
A WHITE “DHOTI” WAS ALL THAT HE WORE
GREAT BELOVED SON OF INDIA
AND THE PEOPLE CALL HIM “MAHATMA”.
NEVER DID HE REST IN PEACE
DARED THE BRITISH WITH NON-VIOLENCE
HE HELP THE POOR AND THE NEEDY; AND
INSTILLED IN US PRIDE AND SELF RESPECT
BROTHERHOOD WAS HIS SERMON
AND AFFECTION FOR THE MASSES HIS HALLMARK
PASSIONATELY HE STRUGGLED FOR OUR FREEDOM; AND
UNITED US TO BE A PROUD INDIAN NATION.
Ever walked the earth,
This is the Bapu of our Bharat,
This is the Gandhi for the world.
The small boy from Porbandar,
With Kasturba he became a crusader,
They both led a devoted life,
To serve the country as a man and wife.
They worked as a team,
To sweep the country clean,
Of the British and their goods,
And in keeping the Swaraj moods.
His needs were few,
His soul very true,
His purpose only ‘one’,
To unite India as one.
Driving away the British raj,
Giving India the swaraj,
Truth, Ahimsa and non-co-operation,
All were his only weapons.
Reading Ruskin “Unto This Last”,
Journeying in the Train to Durban,
His thinking changed from the past,
To awake for the world rising new dawn.
Bengal and Bihar fair!
O Glorious land of Gujarat
With whom shall I compare?
Madras! Maharashtra! Saurashtra!
And Rajputana great!
You all have done your duty
In lifting national weight.
We Hindu! Jain and Muslim!
Parsi! Jew! Buddhist!
Christian! Sikh and Brahmin
Children of the east.
Purified by Ganges
Keep your spirits high
And save your dear old India
And raise a joyous cry!
For so proclaim shastra
Where duty is the goal,
There victory must be follow
To crown the glorious soul.
But if we are divided
There surely lies our fall
In Union lies our safety
As known as each and all.
Then up United India
And make your country bright
In doing one’s duty
There shan’t be fear and fright.
Taught the world at large;
That hatred and violence
Bring nothing else but curse,
“Rise, awake and shake off the slavery”
He called his countrymen, far and near,
And lo! The mighty empire shook
To quit India for ever.
“God is Truth and Truth is God”
What he preached and believed –
That human race is one –
Without any cast and creed,
He, the Father of the Nation, uplifted
All “son of God“ from woe,
Himself worked and set examples,
So that oppression must go
His love, piety and kindness,
Conquered the heart of people.
Without any wealth and kingdom,
He was the King of one and all.
Evil bullet pierced his body,
But not his immortal soul.
Let us bow and take pledge-
his ideals will always be our goal.
Clad in loincloth,
Stripped bare of pomp
And the garlands of adulation.You took command and
spoke in clear and simple words
Believing in the force of your ideas
Rather than of a gun.
Soul force –
Is not the weapon of the weak
But the weapon of the strong.
Soul force –
When will and heart,
And body and mind,
Work in unison.
Soul force –
That alone could prevail
Against the gates of hell.
Fired not with hate for the Other
But with love
For wholeness and humanity.
With the strength to say,
We will not be trampled on like dust.
We will be free!”
Slowly trudged across the worldCovered in the cloak of Ahimsa
Led by faith and not by fetish
Safe on a land of love and truth
You built the Shilpa of freedom
For a beloved motherland
And for the world transcendent
A loin cloth filtering out light
From the darkness around you
