Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi who is known as Mahatma Gandhi. He is also known as Bapu in India. He was born in a small village named Porbandar, Gujarat on 2nd October, 1869. Gandhi was 24 when he arrived in South Africa to work as a legal representative for the Muslim Indian Traders. Indians in South Africa employed Gandhi as a lawyer. Their, Gandhi faced discrimination. He refused to move from the first-class in the train, so he was thrown off. Later, at the request of Gokhale(Gopal Krishna Gokhale) Gandhi returned to India in 1915. At that time he saw the bad situation of India. So, he decided to free India from British rule.

He inspired civil rights movements and freedom across the world. He struggled for India’s independence. Gandhi led nationwide campaigns for easing poverty, expanding women’s rights, building religious and ethnic amity, ending untouchability, but above all for achieving Swaraj or self-rule. He also led Indians in challenging British-imposed salt tax in 1930 with 400 km Dandi Salt March. He marched from Ahmedabad to Dandi. Many people were joined in this campaign. Its success made British upset. British responded by imprisoning over 60,000 people. Later in 1942, he called British to Quit India. He was imprisoned in India as well as in South Africa for many years. He believed in nonviolence and truth and advocated that others to do the same.

However Gandhi himself did not approve of the notion of “Gandhism”, as he explained in 1936:

There is no such thing as “Gandhism”, and I do not want to leave any sect after me. I do not claim to have originated any new principle or doctrine. I have simply tried in my own way to apply the eternal truths to our daily life and problems…The opinions I have formed and the conclusions I have arrived at are not final. I may change them tomorrow. I have nothing new to teach the world. Truth and nonviolence are as old as the hills.

Finally, his struggle against British came to an end on 15th August, 1947. India woke up as a free nation on that day. His sacrifice for the nation and gave birth to many other freedom fighters. Gandhi led India to independence. That’s why he is called Father of the Nation. But a year after on 30th January 1948, he was shoted by a young man with 3 shots on his body. The history says that the young man whose name was Nathuram Godse was only 35 years old. When Gandhi left his room in Birla House for the prayer meeting after his talk with Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. He passed through the garden leaning with grand daughter-in-law – Ava Gandhi and grandniece – Manu Gandhi.

As he walked up the four steps leading to the prayer mandap, Nathuram Godse came before Gandhiji and offered pranam. Gandhiji returned the salute, when the young man remarked “You are late to-day for the prayer.” Gandhiji smiled and replied, “Yes, I am”; but just at that moment, the young man pulled out his revolver and rang out three shots from point-blank range, the bullets piercing just below the heart and stomach. Immediately, Gandhiji collapsed. It was then 5.12 p.m.

Gandhiji  lift both his hands as a sign of prayer in the direction of the large gathering which had assembled for the prayer. He was speechless and the loss of blood, at his age and so soon after his fast, made death inevitable. This was the day when we lose our Bapu forever. Today, he is not with us but he is still present in our heart.

Today, he is not with us but he is still present in our heart. So let us follow his path of truth and nonviolence.
